According to Abbas Abrishami, the head of Iran’s National Elevator Union, Iran has an annual production capacity of 80,000 elevators, but recession in the construction sector has led to a decline, he was quoted as saying by IRNA.

According to the official, the fiscal 2013-14 saw the highest number of elevators produced in Iran, as construction of the so-called Mehr Housing Scheme apartments was in full swing then.

The Mehr project is a large-scale construction program initiated in 2007 by the government of former president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, to provide 2.2 million low-income people with housing units through free land and cheap credits.

There are a total of 750,000 operating elevators that are used by 250 million Iranians every day.

Iran’s National Elevator Union has 1,800 members.
