Colorado’s Ball Corporation announced earlier this week a pilot program for testing and marketing single-use aluminium beverage cups, which the firm says is the first step in introducing infinitely recyclable aluminium as an alternative to plastic.

Ball says the pilot program will introduce a limited supply of aluminium cups beginning next month and running through the end of next year for use in concessions for major indoor and outdoor venues throughout the United States.

John A. Hayes, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Bell Corporation, noted the importance of the program to his company and the beverage industry as a whole.

“As our customers and consumers increasingly seek sustainable beverage packaging options, the launch of the aluminum cup is a significant moment for our company. It is our responsibility as the leader in aluminum beverage packaging to continuously innovate and provide solutions for our customers. We’re excited to bring the aluminum cup to market and expand the product line next year and beyond.”

The new aluminium cup is the product of several years of research and development, including research into consumer attitudes regarding a switch from plastic to aluminium. Per the firm, 67 percent of U.S. consumers are likely to frequent a venue more regularly if they switch to aluminium, and 78 percent say they expect beverage brands to use more environmentally friendly materials for their beverage containers over the next five years.

Ball says the new aluminium cups offer several advantages over existing plastic cups. The aluminium cups produced by Ball are sturdy, durable, and cool to the touch, and easily tolerate customization with logos and graphics. At present Ball offers only a 20-oz model, but the firm says it will introduce other sizes in response to market demand.

Based in suburban Denver, Ball Corporation produces consumer food and beverage packaging for customers around the world. The firm employs 17,500 individuals and boasted net sales of US$11.6 billion in 2018.
