Rouhani: Iran Ready to Broaden Cooperation with IMF

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani in a meeting with Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund Christine Lagarde in New York voiced Tehran's readiness to expand bilateral ties with IMF.

"Iran is willing to deepen its relations with financial institutions, specially the IMF, and benefit from the fund’s advices," Rouhani said during the meeting in New York on Monday.

The Iranian president described the US sanctions against Iran as illegal and contrary to international laws, and stressed the need for international financial institutions to support Tehran against this illegal US action.

"The IMF should demonstrate that it can play its part in the economic stability of a member, and I hope that it can take a positive step in this regard," President Rouhani said.

Lagarde also said that the IMF would continue its cooperation with Iran and continue its work in this field.

In a relevant development in early August, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) predicted that Iran will overcome Spain, Saudi Arabia and Canada and will have become the 15th largest economy in the world by 2021.

According to the Monetary and Banking Research Institute, which is the research arm of the Central Bank of Iran (CBI), Iran will rank the 15th largest economy in the world by 2021, going up three places from the current 18th economy.

According to the data released by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for different countries in the world, Iran’s GDP was at $ 1644 billion in 2017 and it ranked 18th biggest economy in the world.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has predicted that Iran will remain the world's eighteenth largest economy in 2018, 2019, and 2020, but it will overcome Spain, Saudi Arabia and Canada in 2021 and will climb to the fifteenth place.
