First heat at Egyptian Steel micromill #2

The first heat has been produced at Egyptian Steel MI.DA.® #2 located in Al Ain Al Sokhna – National Port Said Steel (NPSS), Egypt.

This is the second MI.DA.® micromill supplied by Danieli in Egypt featuring the endless casting and rolling technology to produce commercial steel rebar for construction applications.

It is a twin of the first MI.DA.® installed in Egypt and located in Beni Suef, also belonging to Egyptian Steel and commissioned in 2016.

Each plant has a design capacity of 830,000 tpy:
530,000 tpy of rebar in bundles are produced in endless casting and rolling mode through a single line; and the remaining 300,000 tpy are cast through two additional casting strands in 130-mm-square billets.

The 165-mm-square-billet of the endless line is cast at a speed exceeding 6 m/min, in-line rolled and quenched into 10 to 25 mm rebars, and finished in perfect bundles.

The Danieli direct rolling and bundling system performs direct cutting to final length, with an additional yield savings of up to 3%, if compared with conventional technologies.

The new MI.DA.® micromill is now expected to ramp up to the maximum productivity within the next three months (from the first heat), as already achieved with the first MI.DA.®

Danieli endless casting-rolling route for deformed bars is an established reliable process to obtain higher productivity at lower operational costs thanks to the high efficiency and energy saving.
