The plant’s fire department contained the fire and prevented it from spreading to other units, IRNA reported.

According to the refinery’s public relation’s office, there were no casualties and production was unaffected. Investigations are underway to determine the cause of the incident.

The news agency said material damage was “insignificant.” No details were amiable.

Built in 1912, Abadan refinery is the first of its kind in Iran and once was the largest in the world.

It was heavily damaged during the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq war. It now refines 400,000 barrels of crude every day.

According to Alireza Sadeqabadi, CEO of the National Iranian Oil Refining and Distribution Company, €2 billion in foreign investment has been made over two years in the refinery located in southern Khuzestan Province.

China's Sinopec International Petroleum Exploration and Production Corporation has invested the money in refinery’s development projects since 2017.
