Bangladesh Bulk Steel Import Statistics: Sep'19

According to bulk vessel line up data compiled with SteelMint, Bangladesh has observed an increase in bulk imports of ferrous scrap, HRC & coal. While pig iron & billet reported nil volume imported during the month.

Ferrous Scrap: The country’s bulk ferrous scrap imports fell by 5% M-o-M. A total of 5 bulk vessels arrived at birth in Sep'19. Total bulk scrap imports in the month stood at 116,412 MT as against 123,016 MT scrap reported a month ago by Bangladesh. On yearly premises, the import witnessed an increase by 100% Y-o-Y, as against 55442 MT in Sep’18. Noticeably in the first 9 months of CY year (Jan’19-Sep’19), scrap import increased by 39% Y-o-Y.

United States supplied the highest 1 vessels carrying 31,500 MT (25% share) bulk ferrous scrap in Sep’19. Followed by other prominent suppliers were Japan 2 vessels carrying 31,100 MT (25% share), Canada 1 vessels carrying 26,916 MT (22% share). Another 67,120 MT steel scrap is expected at Chittagong port, likely arrive at berth in Oct'19.

Coal: Bangladesh coal imports have posted remarkable growth during the month. As per the vessel line-up data compiled by SteelMint, coal imports taken by the country had increased to 428,585 MT in Sep’19, rising by 42 times as against 10,000MT in Aug’19. Indonesia remained the major coal exporter to Bangladesh, as it supplied 100% of the total Coal imported by Bangladesh in Sep’19.

Steel coils: Bulk imports of steel coils showed sharp growth in Sep’19 as the country imported 105,894 MT, increasing by 52% M-o-M as against 69,443 MT imported in Jul’19. Japan & Taiwan were the largest suppliers to Bangladesh of steel coils in Sep’19. Notably, on a yearly basis HRC import up by 38% in CY year (Jan'19-Sep’19) Y-o-Y.
