First VP: Iran’s petrochemical capacity to reach 90m tons by 2021

Iran’s petrochemical production capacity will exceed 90 million tons by 2021, if the 18 petrochemical projects currently under implementation in the country are completed in the next two years, said First Vice President Es’haq Jahangiri.

He added the country’s capacity of producing petrochemicals currently stands at 64 million tons, Shana reported.

Jahangiri said normally, when one government is replaced by another, projects under implementation in the former’s term in office are abandoned by the current government.

It is also possible that investors stop funding important projects because their completion may take several years, he stressed.

The first vice president expressed optimism that Iran’s petrochemical industry will take a great leap forward during the coming years to 2021.

If the country’s petrochemical capacity reaches 90 million tons, it would be a rare incident in the country, he said.

Commenting on unilateral US sanctions reimposed on Iran following the country’s pullout from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action in May 2018, Jahangiri said that by imposing sanctions, Washington aimed to overthrow Iran’s establishment and deal a blow to the country.

He added, however, that the US failed to achieve these goals.
