There was a steeper fall in the volume of long-haul passengers from the Americas, UK, Japan, Singapore and other locations in Asia, down by 33pc to 144,000 from 216,000 a year earlier.

Short-haul passengers, which combines domestic and passengers on flights between Australia and New Zealand, dropped by 25pc to 1.22mn in March from 1.62mn in March 2019 and above the 1.18mn in February.

Global air travel is one of the hardest hit industries by the Covid-19 pandemic. Tourism is also a significant contribution of the New Zealand economy, accounting for around 5pc of its gross domestic product.

The fall in Air New Zealand's passenger volumes was more prominent at New Zealand's busiest airport Auckland, which reported a 42pc drop in total passenger numbers in March from a year earlier.

Air New Zealand has reduced capacity across its network as a result of the impact of the coronavirus on travel demand, with it expecting to cut its long-haul flight capacity by 85pc.
