Sekisui Chemical set up the joint venture Sekisui Bio Refinery on 16 April with state-owned tech investor Japan Investment Corporation to build a waste-based bioethanol production plant in north Japan's Iwate prefecture. The firm will start on final verification and target commercial operations by the 2025-26 fiscal year.
Its technology developed with US recycling venture LanzaTechwill turns flammable waste into bioethanol. Flammable rubbish includes plastics, wooden biomass and paper, clothing and kitchen waste.
Sekisui Chemical will convert 7,300 t/yr of waste into bioethanol as part of the verification process. The firm plans to expand production capacity once commercial operations start, supplying bioethanol to chemical companies manufacturing plastic products and trading firms. The plant's planned production capacity was undisclosed.
Japan's bioethanol imports last year totalled 417,813 bl, which was only bought from Brazil, higher by 11.3pc from 375,462 bl a year earlier, according to data released today by the finance ministry.
