Payam Airport was established in 1997 as a cargo-only airport. The increasing population of Alborz Province prompted authorities to devise plans to develop a passenger terminal for the airport, IRNA reported.

The airport is located in the heart of Payam Special Economic Zone, which is owned by Iran’s Ministry of Information and Communications Technology.
