In 2019, although the global needle coke prices maintained an uptrend, the Chinese prices moved in the opposite direction. The country’s needle coke market was affected by the decline in graphite electrode prices, and the domestic prices dropped 30-40% compared to 2018. Whereas over the same period, the companies ex- China continued to raise the needle coke prices, resulting in a price surge of 20% Y-O-Y basis.

Chinese spot iron ore prices dropped today to USD 88.5/MT, CFR China , as on 13th Aug’19. The prices fell as against USD 95/MT, CFR China towards closing of last weekend. The drop is attributed to reduced demand, increased supply and lowered construction activities in China . Few Chinese mills have reached breakeven levels and hence, are moving ahead to limit production.
